Grammar schools will be allowed to expand under reforms designed to give more pupils access to the best education, the Government has signalled. Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, praised the “world class” education offered by many grammar schools.

12:01AM BST 23 Jun 2011

Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, said state grammars would be able to take advantage of new rules to admit extra students without seeking the permission of local authorities.

In a speech to head teachers, he praised the “world class” education provided by England’s 164 academically selective schools and suggested they were a powerful driver of social mobility.

He also called on them to strike up partnerships with local comprehensives to promote the teaching of tough academic subjects.

It comes as an independent review of Sats tests for 11-year-olds – being published on Thursday – is also expected to underline the Government’s commitment to raising standards in the three-Rs by retaining separate exams in English and maths at the end of primary school.

Currently, some 158,000 pupils attend state-funded grammars – almost five per cent of the school roll – but it is thought the number will grow significantly within just five years.

Figures show as many as 10 children already apply for each selective place at the most popular schools. In recent years, the number of pupils sitting the 11-plus entrance exam in areas such as Kent, Birmingham, Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire, which have the most grammar schools, has also grown.

Ministers are keen to avoid a repeat of the internal revolt over grammar schools that rocked the Conservative Party in 2007 by stating that no more schools will be able to academically select pupils.

But addressing the Grammar School Heads Association in London on Wednesday, Mr Gibb said existing selective schools “would be able to take advantage of crucial freedoms” on admissions.

This includes making it easier for popular schools to expand and scrapping rules requiring schools to consult the local community on admissions rules every five years. More grammars should also convert into independent academies, he added, giving them additional powers over the curriculum, staff pay and the academic year.

Mr Gibb said: “Let me thank the 164 grammar school heads and their staff for the wonderful work they are doing, and have done. Their results over the past year have been incredibly strong. But more importantly, the quality and standard of education is world class.”

He quoted figures showing more than 1,000 grammar school pupil were studying at Oxford or Cambridge after taking A-levels in 2008 and practically every teenager gains five decent GCSEs.

Mr Gibb also told how deprived pupils educated in grammar schools performed almost as well as their more affluent classmates in GCSEs last year, even though a huge gap between rich and poor exists elsewhere in the state system.

“The question of course, is how you achieve that objective?” he said. “And if you look to the example of grammar schools, you see the answer comes from a combination of high standards and ambition.

“Essentially, it boils down to the old grammar school ethos of placing ‘no limit on achievement’.

“Quite clearly there’s a very serious lesson to be taken from this and applied more widely. And that’s why the ‘no limit on achievement’ ethos is one that’s now critical to the Government’s own blueprint for education reform.”

The comments contrast sharply with those made by Ed Balls, the former Labour education secretary, who attacked grammar schools while in power, accusing them of condemning many children to “failure”.

Shaun Fenton, head of Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham, said schools would use new-style freedoms to “strengthen our ability to enable social mobility”.

“Children get one main chance of an education, they deserve one that creates life chances,” he said. “All children deserve that; we can’t afford to wait or be less ambitious, for the sake of the nation’s children and all of our futures.”

If you’re in the market to try a new place downtown, East Bay Meeting Place could be right up your alley. Located in the French Quarter on East Bay St. just south of Queen St., this quaint little restaurant has both Charleston and European charm. It has a great selection of sandwiches for lunch, hot and cold coffee drinks, and many scrumptious desserts, which can almost be detrimental for all of us choco- and sweetaholics. The best thing, in my opinion at least, is their happy hour specials from 4-7:00 p.m. that range from $2 to $4.50.

Another great aspect of East Bay Meeting House is their poetry and open mic night Blues every Monday. These are sure to be interesting and entertaining events. Maybe you will even develop a creative flare and participate in the open mic session!

A quarter of state secondaries are already flouting the law on RE by refusing to teach the compulsory subject to older pupils, research shows.

Some 24 per cent of comprehensives and 31 per cent of grammar schools fail to offer it to 14- to 16-year-olds, even though it has been a core subject for all pupils since 1870, it was claimed. Fewer pupils are also being entered for full GCSEs in religious studies.

But the report – by the National Association of Teachers of RE – warned that “this non-compliance is predicted to increase” next year.

Teachers put the trend down to a Government focus on the basics of English and maths at the expense of other subjects.

It was claimed that the decline has been fuelled in the last year by the introduction of the Coalition’s English Baccalaureate – a new school leaving certificate. This rewards pupils who gain good passes in English, maths, science, a language and either history or geography.

Critics claim the development undermines the teaching of other subjects, such as RE, music, art, physical education, ICT and design and technology, which are not included.

Ed Pawson, the association’s chairman, said, “GCSE religious studies is a subject that requires high standards of knowledge and evaluation of evidence.

“It explores religious and cultural topics and engages in debates over issues of diversity and conflict, ethics, philosophy and social change.

“It has grown massively in popularity over recent years because students recognise it as a subject of significant relevance to the world they encounter.

“By excluding RS from the English Baccalaureate, Michael Gove [the Education Secretary] is effectively squeezing it out of the curriculum in many of our schools across the country. This truly is a cruel blow.”

RE is a legal requirement for all pupils. Even if teenagers fail to take a GCSE in the subject, they should still receive lessons in RE up to the age of 16.

In the latest study, the association surveyed almost 2,000 schools – more than half of those in England.

Of those, a quarter of non-denominational schools refused to comply with the law by failing to offer RE to children aged 14 and over this year. Some 11 per cent of Anglican schools, three per cent of Roman Catholic schools and 20 per cent of those run by other faiths also snub the subject.

This proportion is set to rise next year, the study said, with almost a third of non-religious schools dropping RE for teenagers. The failure rate will rise to 13 per cent among Anglicans and five per cent among Catholic schools.

As many of you know last Thursday I had my first in a series of teleseminars with award winning hypnotist and marketing expert John Weir. I was really looking forward to hosting the event as Ive been waiting to do more of these type of events for my readers. I must admit it feels nice to change the way I connect with my readers. Im so used to writing that I forget there are other ways for me to reach out to all of you.

I was a little nervous because as I just mentioned I dont do this type of thing much so I had to step out of my comfort zone, but in the end I can only get better right? I want to thank everyone that turned out for the call. It really means a lot to John and me.

So How Did The Call Go?

For the most part the call went really good. The call was supposed to only last an hour, but we ended up going for an hour and a half. We did have some audio problems during the first half of the call which was beyond our control, but the problem correctly its self and the second half of the call went pretty smooth I must say.

We had a great turnout with some really big names in hypnosis on the call. My good friends Larry Elman (son of Dave Elman) and his wife Cheryl Elman were both on the call. Honestly I was only expecting my readers and some of Johns, but it was a great turn out.

Beside the noise during the first half John introduced himself and gave background on his experiences, his vision for our profession and why he created the Hypnosis Business Coaching Home Study Course. As I explained before the first call was going to be more of an introduction and a inside look into how his program can help hypnotists to grow their business.

This wasnt a pitch fest by any means, but the calls were born from helping people to understand the new program from John Weir. Once we finished the introduction we got into the real meat of the Teleseminar calls which is answering questions from John and once in a while myself.

Since time for the call was limited we could only take a few email questions, but the ones we got were really good and John provided some serious value to everyone on the call. John told listeners how to book more clients, how to build websites for free, the difference between branding and marketing and a lot more.

John Weir Answered Questioned From The Audience

After we answered some readers emails ( please submit your questions to us. Anything you want to know about building and marketing your practice and well answer it live on the call.) we moved on to questions from the people on the call. We were hoping for some questions from people, but for some reason people tend to be shy about speaking up on the call. John as well as I have experienced this before with coaching programs we have put on.

Just remember that we are doing this for you. How many times in life will you get to ask two Hypnotists who are experts at building a business and marketing anything you want to know to help you promote and market your business and practice? So dont be shywe dont bite!

Only after the call ended did we find out that a few people did attempt to speak up and ask some questions, but for whatever reason they had some problems with their voice coming through. This is to be expected as technology isnt perfect and stuff happens. I wanted to use another word for stuff, but you get the idea.

Listen To The Replay Now

Long story short the call when great and John even offered everyone on the call a special discount for his new program. This was a special only for people on the call. Either way, I have posted a link to the first teleseminar call below so you listen to it at your convience.

Please keep in mind that the first call was more of an introduction and the rest of the calls will pretty much be all Q and As, but John did deliver some really good information in the first call.
